I’ve had an interesting and varied career, starting out in DBA and development work and growing into architecture and technical leadership. What I enjoy most is data modeling, data integration, and visualization with large datasets. My passion is taking complex pieces of data and their relationships and surfacing them through elegant APIs for developers, or discovery tools for ops teams and end users.

Over the last 20+ years that’s meant building event-driven platforms and object stores at Integration Point, moving a global trade platform to the cloud at Thomson Reuters, and, more recently, helping teams adopt serverless and GenAI on AWS at FormAssembly and Caylent.

How I work

I like to translate business requirements into phased delivery that actually ships, and to leave teams stronger than I found them. I try to be the kind of teammate who brings a coaching mentality to the work: sharing what I know, asking good questions, and celebrating other people’s wins. Writing style guides and teaching computer science concepts like domain driven design are some of the most rewarding parts of the job for me. That carries over to my volunteer work as a mountain bike coach with ROOTZ.

I’m also a fan of using AI tools (Copilot, Claude Code, Kiro) to move faster, as long as code quality and architectural integrity don’t pay the price.

Why this site exists

I’ve been looking for a good format for a technical blog for a while, and I never liked what CMSs offered: they were either too much or too little. GitHub Pages and the simplicity of Markdown turned out to be the sweet spot. This site started as a home for tutorials and has grown into a place to share a bit more of who I am.

Outside of work

I’m happiest on two wheels, whether that’s cycling or mountain biking, and I’ll happily trade a weekend for a night or two camping. Cycling has even found its way into my work: one of my tutorials builds Kibana dashboards from public bike share data.
